Every brand starts with someone deciding that something is missing.
For Hello Stranger, that someone was Amy. She started this brand in Mount Maunganui with a pretty simple idea: kids' clothing in New Zealand could be better. Not fussier, not more expensive — just better. Clothes that could handle a morning at the beach and an afternoon at the playground, that looked good enough for kids to actually want to wear them, and that didn't fall apart after six washes.
That idea is still the whole point of what we do.
Where it began: Mount Maunganui
If you know the Mount, you know why a kids' clothing brand born there looks the way it does.
It's a place where kids live outdoors. Salt water, sand, bike rides, walking up the Mauao track, running around barefoot until someone makes them put shoes on. Life there is relaxed and it's active, and clothes either keep up with that or they don't.
Amy built Hello Stranger around exactly that lifestyle — a relaxed coastal feel, mixed with a bit of street-inspired edge. Not precious. Not overly cutesy. Just genuinely cool clothing that suits the way Kiwi kids actually spend their days.
That mix of coastal and street is still the heart of every collection, whether you're looking at girls' clothing or boys' clothing.
The idea that never changed: clothes kids actually want to wear
Here's something Amy understood early, and it's probably the single most important thing about this brand.
There's a big difference between clothes that parents choose and clothes that kids choose.
Plenty of kidswear is designed to appeal to adults. It looks lovely on a hanger and photographs beautifully. Then your child refuses to put it on, or wears it once, and it sits in the drawer while they reach for the same soft, comfortable thing every single morning.
Hello Stranger was always designed for that second category. Comfortable enough that kids reach for it themselves. Good-looking enough that you're happy for them to. Our Classics tees and fleeces are the clearest example — they're the pieces that end up in the wash constantly, because they're the ones that get worn constantly.
Over the years that approach built something you can't manufacture: a genuinely loyal community of New Zealand families who care about quality, individuality and design that lasts longer than one season.
Why I bought Hello Stranger
Hi — I'm Hayley, and I own Hello Stranger now.
I've always wanted to run my own business. More than the idea of any particular industry, I wanted to build something that was truly mine, and I wanted the freedom and flexibility that comes with that. I wanted to create something I could be proud of.
So I wasn't out looking for a clothing brand, specifically. I was looking for the right business.
When Hello Stranger came up, it clicked immediately. It already had a strong identity, a loyal customer base and a huge amount of potential. Those first two things are the hardest parts to build from scratch, and Amy had already done that work brilliantly. What I could see was the opportunity to take an already-loved New Zealand brand and keep growing it — without changing the things families already loved about it.
There was also a more personal side to it.
I'm a mum to Nicholas, so I found myself looking at the brand through a parent's eyes as much as a buyer's. I loved seeing him in pieces that were comfortable and practical but still had loads of personality — clothes he could genuinely play in. That gave me a much deeper appreciation for what Hello Stranger actually represents, and why the customers here are so loyal.
I wasn't buying a logo and a stock list. I was buying something that already worked, and that mattered to people.
What I'm focused on now
My job, as I see it, is to continue Amy's legacy while bringing my own ideas and energy to it.
Practically, that means a few things:
Designing for real life. Clothing that makes life easier for parents and gives kids the confidence to just be kids. Pieces you don't have to think twice about before they head out the door.
Everyday, not just occasions. Collections kids actually want to wear on a normal Tuesday — not outfits saved for special events. That means tops and bottoms that work together, pyjamas they're happy to get into, and hats and accessories that finish it all off.
Getting better every season. Improving quality, fit and thoughtful design with each new range. Small refinements add up.
Building the community. Growing Hello Stranger into a brand people feel genuinely connected to — not just a shop they buy from.
And underneath all of that, building a New Zealand business that families trust, and that my own family is proud of.
A little about me
I'll be honest: owning this business has pushed me well outside my comfort zone — in the best possible way.
Every single day I'm learning something new. Product design. Working with factories. Ecommerce, digital marketing, customer experience, all of it. Some days that's exhilarating and some days it's a lot. But no two days are ever the same, and I genuinely love that.
I'm excited about where Hello Stranger can go over the next few years. And I'm just as committed to keeping it true to the values that made families fall in love with it in the first place.
Come and have a look
If you're new here, the easiest place to start is new arrivals for girls or new arrivals for boys. If you'd rather ease in, the sale section is a good way to try a few pieces.
You can also find us through our stockists around New Zealand, read about our approach to sustainability, or just get in touch — I read the messages myself.
Thanks for being part of this. It genuinely means a lot.
